Intensywne i długotrwałe opady deszczu w trakcie pory deszczowej doprowadziły do gwałtownych powodzi w Nairobi i wielu regionach Kenii. Skala zniszczeń jest ogromna – sytuacja przerodziła się w poważny kryzys humanitarny, infrastrukturalny i gospodarczy.
Co najmniej 88 ofiar śmiertelnych w całym kraju, w tym 37 w Nairobi – to najbardziej dotknięty obszar w Kraju
Ponad 34 tys. osób musiało zostać ewakuowanych
Powodzie objęły ponad 21 hrabstw, w tym regiony Nyanza i wschodnią część kraju
Wylewy rzek, m.in. rzeki Nairobi, oraz przeciążona infrastruktura kanalizacyjna pogłębiły skutki katastrofy
W samym Nairobi najbardziej ucierpiały tereny nisko położone i nieformalne osiedla. Zalane zostały domy, zniszczone są drogi i sparaliżowana jest infrastruktura. Woda porywała samochody, a ludzie byli uwięzieni w budynkach i na dachach.
Kluczowi w walce z żywiołem w Kenii są strażacy. Większość z nich była szkolona w Fire And Rescue Training Centre, Kenya – Firetrack przez PCPM. Ewakuują oni mieszkańców z zalanych domów i pojazdów. Wykorzystują łodzie, a co ważne, liny i specjalistyczny sprzęt ratowniczy, na który kładliśmy nacisk podczas szkoleń. Często pracują w ekstremalnie trudnych warunkach: silny nurt, ograniczona widoczność
Szybka i profesjonalna reakcja ratuje życie i ogranicza liczbę ofiar.

Floods in Kenya – a tough situation and the vital role of firefighters trained by PCPM
Heavy and long rainfall during the rainy season has led to severe flooding in Nairobi and many regions of Kenya. The scale of the destruction is immense – the situation has escalated into a serious humanitarian, infrastructural, and economic crisis.
At least 88 fatalities across the country, including 37 in Nairobi – the worst-hit area in the country
Over 34,000 people have had to be evacuated
The floods have affected over 21 counties, including the Nyanza region and the eastern part of the country
River overflows, including the Nairobi River, and an overburdened sewerage system, have made the effects of the disaster worse
In Nairobi itself, low-lying areas and informal settlements have been hardest hit. Homes have been flooded, roads destroyed, and infrastructure paralysed. Water swept away cars, and people were trapped in buildings and on rooftops.
Firefighters are key to combating the disaster in Kenya. Most of them were trained at the Fire And Rescue Training Centre, Kenya – Firetrack by PCPM. They are evacuating residents from flooded homes and vehicles. They use boats and, importantly, ropes and specialist rescue equipment, which we focused on during the training. They often work in extremely difficult conditions: strong currents, limited visibility
